Men, women and transgender students can pee together in U. of Vermont restrooms

The University of Vermont is a pioneer in letting students choose their own singular gender pronouns (the uncreative “they” is popular), and now it’s a pioneer in letting students relieve themselves in the same room on study breaks, regardless of their genitals and hormonal makeup.

The Vermont Cynic reports that four multi-stall restrooms in the Bailey Howe Library have been designated “gender-inclusive” following protests by Justice for Queer and Trans Students last semester.

Their motto: “Peeing is a right, not a privilege.”

The library is just the first step toward eroding restroom privacy for students who do not want men or women in their facilities while their pants are down:

When the group came to the dean of libraries’ office at the end of last year, they were eager to assist in bringing about these changes, said Selene Colburn, Assistant to the Dean of Libraries.

The changes involved discussions with representatives from the LGBTQA center and the office of human resources, diversity and multicultural affairs, Colburn said.

UVM is not stopping with the library, she said. There will be changes across campus to make restrooms more inclusive for everyone, regardless of gender identity.

Justice for QTs has been more than “eager to assist” – it has been militant about the restrooms in the past few months.

Activists occupied the dean of libraries’ office for two days, only relenting after the library said it would consider the inclusive restrooms in the summer.

The Cynic article doesn’t say whether similar changes are coming to locker rooms and other changing rooms.
