Outrageously Dumb Campus Moments of the Week (March 23)

The College Fix presents a roundup of the top scandals, screw-ups, and stupid decisions involving college campuses. In this week’s edition, Louis Farrakhan visits the University of California—offending absolutely everyone—and a deranged Florida student is caught on video attacking her classmates. But first…

3). Let’s just get this one out of the way: Sandra Fluke, self-appointed leader of womankind, expressed interest in running for political office. She also demanded that other candidates pass her litmus test of being “pro-woman,” as opposed to all the anti-woman candidates who typically win elections.

I’m sick of talking about her, so I’ll leave it to Fix Contributor Elaine Plott, who astutely observed that the real “War on Women” is taking place in the Middle East.

2). Louis Farrakhan, a black separatist and leader of the Nation of Islam, gave a speech at the University of California, Berkeley. In the past, Farrakhan has made racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic statements. This time, students were treated to his mocking impression of an Asian person.

UC President Mark Yudof took the opportunity to remind everyone that all the usual free speech talking points apply here—he has the right, protest if you want, more speech not less speech, etc. And he’s right.

Still, it is disconcerting to watch seemingly sane college students fawning over an obviously crazy person, as they do in the video footage.

1). Speaking of crazy people, all hell broke loose inside a lecture hall at Florida Atlantic University. A black student became unhinged during a discussion about evolution, launched into a racist tirade, threatened the teacher and other students, and eventually, attacked someone. The video really has to be seen in its entirety to be believed.

TCF Editor Nathan Harden pointed out that the media seems to have covered this story the wrong way. Many news headlines made the perpetrator sound like some religious, Creationist whacko, when the incident had far more to do with general insanity—and possibly race—than it did with evolution.

In any case, this must be a professor’s worst nightmare.
