OPINION: No one close to where the racial slur allegedly occurred even heard it
A Texas school district apologized for an alleged racial slur incident, despite it acknowledging there is “insufficient evidence” to identify the culprit. Furthermore, there were no actual witnesses in the crowd that identified culprits and the accusers’ stories changed during the investigation.
Fort Worth Independent School District recently released a seven-page report in response to a public records report by a local news outlet. The superintendent also recently apologized at a school board meeting.
The district’s “investigator found that it is more likely than not that a student or students in the Arlington Heights student section made racial slurs to the Northside Cheerleaders.” Yet, the evidence is incredibly thin for this claim.
Fort Worth Report did a solid job of not only quoting from the document but also providing it in full for its readers, and other journalists, to look at.
Six of the nine Northside High School cheerleaders (pictured) alleged “students in the student body section of the Arlington Heights stands made racial slurs, calling the Northside Cheerleaders names, such as ‘Beaners,’ ‘Wetbacks,’ and telling them to take their ‘Mexican asses back to Mexico,’” when they went over to the other side to exchange gifts with the Arlington Heights High School cheerleaders.
The complaints included other allegations that are not all slurs or even punishable conduct:
The Northside Cheerleaders further reported to Coach 1 that a student from Arlington Heights held up a “Trump” flag, while several students made a hand gesture of “Steers” pointing down, referring to Northside’s mascot of a “Steer.” According to Coach 1’s complaint, a second Northside Cheer Coach (“Coach 2”) walked over to the Arlington Heights side to inform an adult of what the Northside Cheerleaders reported experiencing. Coach 2 returned and indicated that as she approached the Arlington Heights side of the field, a student from Arlington Heights was heard saying, “Oh, here comes the Beaner coach,” and another student flipped her off with an obscene hand gesture.
“No one on the Arlington Heights side of the stadium (cheerleaders, campus administrators, nor students) report that they heard anyone in the student section making racial slurs to the Northside Cheerleaders,” the report stated. “All acknowledge that individuals in the student section ‘booed’ the Northside Cheerleaders when they arrived and made the ‘Steers’ down gesture.”
A district employee “stated that he did not hear any racial slurs being made by Arlington Heights students,” according to the report.
The complaining coach, who was only passing along what he heard, also had “inconsistencies” in his accusations, according to the report.
The same coach also had to recant the testimony of a cheerleader who originally made the accusations. Instead, “the team” identified the alleged (unconfirmed) culprits.
The story only continued to fall apart the more questions were asked.
Coach 2 identified the culprit who allegedly flipped her off – except the student, three witnesses, and his mom all confirmed he had left the game prior to the alleged incident.
The investigator concluded “it is more likely than not that campus staff members did not hear students from Arlington Heights make any racial slurs.”
By now it should appear this is clearly a hoax – accusations of racial slurs at sporting events regularly fall apart. It is simply not believable that cheerleaders in a loud stadium heard something in a crowd that no one sitting in the vicinity heard.
