A University of Chicago professor who described her employer as “evil” and a “colonial landlord” over the summer is now facing felony charges for alleged aggravated battery against a police officer.

The charges stem from sociology Professor Eman Abdelhadi’s involvement in a protest Friday near an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Broadview, Illinois, The Chicago Maroon reports

Abdelhadi was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated battery, a felony, and two counts of obstructing the peace, a misdemeanor, according to information the Cook County Sheriff’s Office provided to Fox News Digital on Monday.

In a post Monday on Bluesky, the professor appeared to suggest that law enforcement officers were the ones to blame for the violence at the protest.

“Claim: rioters attacked ICE,” Abdelhadi wrote. “Truth: ICE rushed at unarmed protesters standing on a patch of grass.”

She also reposted a video of herself yelling “Shame!” at police officers while wearing a “Free Palestine” T-shirt.

According to The Maroon, the police presence was “significant” during the Friday protest:

Posts on X and Bluesky show [Abdelhadi] was present at the demonstration. One post on X that has since been deleted stated she was placed in a Cook County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) van following her arrest and “hasn’t been read her rights.” Bluesky accounts reported heavy police presence, barricades, and protestors being tackled or pushed back. ICE, meanwhile, has characterized demonstrators at the Broadview facility as activists defending convicted criminals.

CCSO directed the Maroon to other law enforcement agencies present at the protest when asked for information about Abdelhadi’s arrest.

Neither she nor the university’s media relations office immediately returned a request for comment from The College Fix.

According to Fox News:

Left-wing agitators have been rallying outside the ICE facility in Broadview, Illinois, for weeks. Rioters have blocked ICE vehicles from exiting the facilities, and have been involved in a slew of violent confrontations with police, leading to more than a dozen arrests.

Posts from Abdelhadi’s X account show that she was at the rally on Friday. In her last post at 8:52 a.m., she took a photo of a line of Illinois State Police officers, and accused the state of “enforcing Trump’s agenda of terrorizing our community with abductions.”

She is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday, according to the report.

Earlier this summer, Abdelhadi also caught the attention of her employer. The University of Chicago said it was looking into comments that she had made at the Socialism 2025 Conference in July, The Fix reported previously.

According to a Maroon report from the time, Abdelhadi described her employer as “evil,” a “colonial landlord,” and a “police force” during a panel discussion about “revolutionary accompaniment.”
