College Fix’s top 10 most read articles of 2016: The war on masculinity, whiteness, free speech

It was a busy year at The College Fix. Higher education continues to produce example after example of political correctness, liberal bias, hindrances on free speech, identity politics run amok and much more.

Here are the top 10 most-read articles published this year by The College Fix.

1. TRENDING: Universities work to purge male students of their ‘toxic’ masculinity

Universities across the nation this year took steps to actively purge male students of what’s been labeled “toxic masculinity.”

Examples abounded of campuses hosting training sessions, group meetings, Shrug.Shutterstocklectures and other programs to effectively cleanse what many campus leaders and left-leaning scholars contend is an unhealthy masculinity in young men today.

On campus, toxic masculinity was often blamed for sexual violence, body shaming, a “hyper-masculinized sporting culture,” acts of domestic terrorism and much more.

2. Cal State LA offers segregated housing for black students

California State University Los Angeles rolled out segregated housing for black students for the 2016-17 school year.

The arrangement came roughly nine months after the university’s Black Student Union issued a set of demands in response to what its members contend are frequent “racist attacks” on campus, such as “racially insensitive remarks” and “microaggressions” by professors and students. One demand called for a “CSLA housing space delegated for Black students.”

Campus leaders denied the housing was segregation, saying it was open to all students. But the housing was marketed to black students as a way for black students to live together, despite the fine print. For all intents and purposes, it’s modern day segregation.

Cal State joined many other campuses across the nation that offer similar arrangements creating a minority-majority dorm life. Meanwhile, campus leaders ignore studies that show cloistering students of color actually has a harmful effect on their relationships with other ethnic groups on campus.

3. Professors tell students: Drop class if you dispute man-made climate change

Professors co-teaching an online course called “Medical Humanities in the Digital Age” at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs told their students CensoredGlobalWarming.BrettTatmanvia email that man-made climate change is not open for debate, and those who think otherwise have no place in their course.

“The point of departure for this course is based on the scientific premise that human induced climate change is valid and occurring. We will not, at any time, debate the science of climate change, nor will the ‘other side’ of the climate change debate be taught or discussed in this course,” states the email, a copy of which was provided to The College Fix by a student in the course.

The scholars’ edict created so much controversy the chancellor ended up apologizing for it to the board of regents.

4. Columbia University to host no-whites-allowed student leadership retreat

Modern day segregation continued at Columbia University, which hosted a “Students of Color Leadership Retreat.” Again, technically it’s open to all students but advertised and marketed to students of color for students of color, as its moniker clearly spells out.

5. Princeton HR department: Don’t use word ‘man’

After The College Fix reported that Princeton University’s HR department Man.Shutterstocklargely wiped the word “man” from its vocabulary, the news was picked up far and wide, mocked and scorned for its ridiculousness. After the national spanking, the university walked back some of its wording recommendations.

6. White students undergo weekly ‘deconstructing whiteness’ program at Northwestern University

White college students underwent a weekly “deconstructing whiteness” program at Northwestern University this year. The “6-part workshop series for undergraduate students who self-identify as white” launched in January and ran through March. The program was offered under the guise of “social justice.”

7. UNL students restricted by new ‘respect’ policy

Calling the University of Nebraska Lincoln a place that “values acceptance,” the institution kicked off the fall semester with its newly installed chancellor silenced.shutterstockessentially telling new students they should not say or do things that might be offensive or cause people to feel disrespected, calling the stance “nonnegotiable.”

8. University distributes seven-page speech guide

Student leaders of this year’s freshman orientation at James Madison University were given a list of 35 things they should avoid saying, including phrases such as “you have such a pretty face,” “love the sinner, hate the sin,” “we’re all part of the human race,” “I treat all people the same,” “it was only a joke,” “I never owned slaves,” and “people just need to pick themselves up by their bootstraps,” among other expressions.

9. Public university now requires applicants pledge commitment to ‘diversity and inclusion’

The University of Cincinnati rolled out a new policy that requires faculty and staff applicants pledge their commitment to “diversity and inclusion.”

The policy comes at a university with a stated goal of hiring more “historically underrepresented” employees, a benchmark spelled out in its “UC Affirmative Action Plan” that calls for more African American, women, and other “traditionally unrepresented” employees campuswide.

10. UC President Napolitano to campus cops: Don’t enforce federal immigration law

University of California President Janet Napolitano declared that system leaders will protect and defend students in the country illegally — and will advise campus cops to do the same.

Napolitano — who served as Secretary of Homeland Security under the Obama administration, charged with protecting the nation’s borders — put out a statement after Donald Trump was elected that her office will “vigorously protect the privacy and civil rights of the undocumented members of the UC community and will direct its police departments not to undertake joint efforts with any government agencies to enforce federal immigration law.”
