‘Iowans are ready for a return to sanity, and that begins with recognizing this basic biological reality,’ GOP lawmakers say
Prompted by changes under the Trump administration, Iowa’s three public universities recently removed multiple “gender” options from their admissions applications.
The applications now ask students to identify their sex by choosing male, female, or “prefer not to answer,” The Gazette reports. The public universities in the state are the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and University of Northern Iowa.
Prior to the changes, the application for the University of Iowa allowed students to choose from “at least seven different genders,” according to a report on the Iowa Board of Regents website.
The options were: “agender, cisgender, man, nonbinary, transgender, woman, another gender not listed above, and prefer not to answer,” according to The Gazette.
Prompting the change was a letter from Iowa Rep. Taylor Collins, R-Mediapolis, and Sen. Lynn Evans, R-Aurelia, to the Board of Regents on Feb. 10.
“As part of President Trump’s Restoring Sanity Agenda, he has made it the official policy of the United States that there are only two genders — male and female,” they wrote, according to a copy of the letter published on the regents’ website.
The lawmakers asked the regents to “adopt the same policy outlined by President Trump” and end “contrary practices” such as listing multiple gender options on their admissions applications.
“If we have recognized anything since the last election, Americans and Iowans are ready for a return to sanity, and that begins with recognizing this basic biological reality,” they wrote.
The universities changed their applications to the two-sex option as of Feb. 13, according to the report to the regents.
“Questions on gender have been removed from the university applications,” the report states.
The regents are scheduled to meet Feb. 27.
Recently, President Donald Trump signed an executive order making it “the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.” It also recognizes that “[t]hese sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”
