OPINION: A better definition for the performative DSA is ‘Daddy’s Savings Account‘
How far have we come (or, more accurately, fallen) since the Cold War where now well-to-do college students openly express pride in being “red” — aka communist.
“The leaves are not the reds in Ithaca,” Cornell’s chapter of the Young Democratic Socialists of America writes in a recent student paper op-ed. The YDSA “is busy organizing toward a just, ethical and socialist society.”
Riiiiiight.
Just and ethical? Two of the major issues about which the Cornell YDSA yammers are “Palestine organizing” and “abolishing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement,” aka ICE.
Such can really only be adequately explained by oppression studies, about which, no doubt, these pampered communists have had many related courses and workshops.
Their op-ed specifically states the YDSA Political Education Committee “regularly hosts reading groups and events discussing communism, anti-imperialism and labor organizing.”
But what exactly is just and ethical about … Hamas and the Palestinians? Do these YDSA clowns know even the slightest bit of history surrounding the region in question? Or are they like actor Ryan Reynolds, who recently stated he thinks the Cuban Missile Crisis happened in the 1980s?
What is just and ethical about advocating for determined terrorists who three years ago murdered the equivalent of nearly 50,000 Americans? Imagine how the YDSA crybullies would react if they saw Hamas paragliders coming over the horizon in Ithaca, NY and then their pilots began killing and maiming everyone in sight.

How is it just and ethical to constantly lie about Israel is committing “genocide” (used four times in the YDSA op-ed) in response to Hamas’ October 2023 assault? But even if Israel’s response was a fraction of the accusations — wiping Hamas and its acolytes from the face of the Earth — how much is someone (or something) supposed to endure before they finally say “enough”?
During World War II did American generals tell their underlings “Hey, the Japanese just killed 5,000 of our boys in that last attack — make sure we don’t go any higher than that figure in our response”?
No. Because such would be insane. About as insane as dismantling the U.S.’s borders allowing anyone to come in (like what happened between 2021 and 2024) in addition to the organization whose job it is to secure the border.
Remember, too, groups like the YDSA also favor the abolition of prisons, so it doesn’t require a college degree to figure how negatively your personal safety will be affected if these cretins get their way.
Unlike you, many if not all these YDSA snobs have the monetary means to protect themselves, just like the residents of Martha’s Vineyard a few years back. Amazingly, those proud, vocal progressives didn’t happily take in the refugees who were flown in. They had ’em booted out in a matter of hours.
The YDSA notes in its op-ed that, of all things, its Queer Solidarity Committee “took charge” of the campaign to make Cornell a “sanctuary campus.” How many Cornellians welcomed illegal U.S. residents into their apartments and dorms?
And lastly, why are the YDSA and progressive Cornellians still in Ithaca … let alone the country? After all, they criticize the university for being “founded by the unlawful and unethical seizure of Indigenous land” and claim it still “acts as a parasite.”
It’s all performative.
