Argues process ‘appeasing the authoritarian and the fascist tendencies that the Trump administration made possible’
The director of the School District of Philadelphia’s social studies curriculum sued the district in federal court on Wednesday, alleging “violations of his First Amendment rights.”
The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Ismael Jimenez, an “outspoken educator once lauded and entrusted” by the district, has been in a “termination proceeding,” revealed by Superintendent Tony Watlington Sr. in a U.S. House of Representatives Education Committee hearing in September.
The committee, which held a hearing on claims that Philly and Berkeley, Calif., schools were teaching “anti-Israel content” and other “radical political causes,” referenced several of Jimenez’s controversial social media posts, including “Israel is a terrorist state” and a retweet of “Blaming Hamas for firing rockets at Israel is like blaming a woman for punching her rapist.”
The Inquirer reported Jimenez’s education career up until Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack against Israel civilians was “exemplary,” but then took a “sharp U-turn.”
The Jewish Federation of Philadelphia submitted “multiple complaints” about Jimenez over the last two years. The head of the group’s Community Relations Council noted: “As director of social studies for the entire district, Jimenez made statements on camera that rationalized the Oct. 7 massacre and denied the Jewish people’s connection to the land of Israel.”
A group called the School District of Philadelphia Jewish Family Association alleged Jimenez bought a book about “the ‘colonization of Palestine’ for his central office team” and claimed the “antisemitic and anti-Israel views” expressed on his social media accounts “blurred the lines between professional and personal.”
In April 2024, the district had an independent firm investigate “possible improprieties” by Jimenez. It reportedly concluded that he “did not purchase or approve improper or antisemitic learning material,” and that his social media posts, while constitutionally protected, “were a ’cause for concern.’”
Jimenez contends the district’s attempt to fire him, as well as curriculum changes, are examples of the SDP “‘kowtowing’ to conservative politicians in power and their allies”:
I think it’s appeasing the authoritarian and the fascist tendencies that the Trump administration made possible, that embolden demagoguery of these politicians who are using claims of antisemitism to stifle any type of critical history, critical social studies.
Jimenez said he has “suffered financial loss, professional injury, and deterrence of protected expression from the district’s ‘unlawful retaliation’ over his personal social media posts,” according to the article.
A petition in support of Jimenez has just under 2,000 signatures out of a goal of 3,200.
“We are concerned that the district has capitulated to the racist, rightwing, and pro-Israel forces that have been attacking Ismael and other antiracist teachers in the school district,” the petition reads.
The College Fix has reached out to Jimenez for further comment.
