The University of Arizona has suspended all fraternity activities as it grapples with numerous physical assault, hazing, and drug and alcohol allegations regarding half its chapters, putting a halt to parties or other social events.

An internal memo from Dean of Students Chrissy Lieberman dated Oct. 5 said her office is “investigating multiple reports of misconduct involving nearly half of the 21 fraternities on campus,” Arizona’s Family reported.

“The violations range from physical assault, drugs and alcohol, hazing and creating unsafe environments for students,” the outlet reported. “Effective immediately, all fraternity chapters are under interim activities suspension until all chapter advisers have met with the Dean.”

According to the memo, the “number of cases under investigation and the severity of the concerns is egregious.”

The suspension comes amid gang rape allegations against a fraternity at Cornell University that has rocked the Ivy League institution and drawn national scrutiny and outrage.

“As you know, the value of the Greek experience is under scrutiny nationwide. It is time fo rthe University of Arizona Greek community to step up and set an example for good,” the memo stated.
