U. Georgia apologizes for giving Ludacris $65,000 and box of condoms for 15-minute performance

Hindsight is 20-20.

The athletic director of the University of Georgia apologized to his athletics department’s board last week for a contract that gave the rap star Ludacris $65,000 for a 15-minute performance in April.

The artist’s rider, a copy of which was published by Deadspin, had also demanded a box of Trojan Magnum condoms among other amenities, such as: two bottles of Belvedere Vodka, two bottles of Conjure Cognac, two Jo Malone candles (gardenia scent), Nag Champa incense, specific types of peanut butter and jelly, and several other items, such as Dove soap, batteries and various juices.

“I do want to take this opportunity to apologize to our board for mistakes we made with certain aspects of the details of an entertainment agreement,” AD Greg McGarity said, The Athens Banner-Herald reported. “Few things in my professional life have bothered me more than this situation. There are no reruns in life so we need to turn the page, learn from our mistakes and do everything we can to make sure errors of this nature do not reoccur.”

“[We] certainly appreciated that the athletic department took responsibility for some of the terms in that contract. Obviously in retrospect they should have done a more thorough job of reviewing all of the riders and removing those that were objectionable. I appreciate that he’s accepted that that’s what athletics should have done and what it will do moving forward.”

The university has originally agreed to the contract because it was scrambling to find a high-profile performance last-minute for its annual G-Day intrasquad spring scrimmage. Officials had wanted to attract a record crowd, reports NBC-Atlanta.
