Work-study jobs are subsidized by taxpayers
Georgetown University students who participate in the taxpayer-funded work-study program are required to participate in a “microaggressions” training in order to work at the institution’s Center for Social Justice.
Campus Reform first reported on the requirement this week. Its report notes that the Catholic university’s center employs about 200 undergraduates every academic year, many through Federal Work-Study.
In order to work at the center, students are “required” to participate in its “Critical Conversations on Race,” according to its website.
The training aims “to help Georgetown students build awareness, knowledge, and skills to take action grounded in racial and social justice,” the center states.
Session topics include “white supremacy culture,” “microaggressions and triggers,” “ implicit bias and privilege,” and “diversity, equity, and inclusion.”
The training also “provide[s] a solid foundational understanding” of issues such as “racial identity and cultural humility,” “defining and identifying the differences between individual, interpersonal, and institutionalized racism,” and “safe space,” according to the center website.
What’s more, according to the report:
Many of the Center for Social Justice’s job opportunities require applicants to be eligible for Federal Work-Study.
Students who are part of the center’s operations team provide “essential behind-the-scenes infrastructure for EngageDC programs, community-based learning courses, engaged research, student organizations, staff-directed initiatives, and racial justice work.”
Student Academic Assistants with the center assist faculty members who are teaching a course related to “social justice, community-engaged, or community-based learning” or are working on a project with “social justice implications.”
Both position categories require students to be eligible for Federal Work-Study.
As Campus Reform noted, “While the Department of Education has broad guidelines for student work-study positions, it does not expressly regulate on-campus jobs that are potentially political or ideological.”
The program does prohibit partisan election jobs, a change the Trump administration made after The College Fix and others uncovered evidence of the taxpayer-funded student jobs supporting left-wing election efforts.
The work-study program offers low-income students federally subsidized part-time jobs to help them pay for tuition and other college expenses.
