Protesters ‘were warned about their behaviors and chose to continue,’ police say
Protesters yelling profanities disrupted a Turning Point USA event featuring conservative activist Alex Stein at the University of Oregon Wednesday, leading to three arrests.
One protester screamed, “Go to hell, you fascist scum,” “Oregon hates you,” and “You don’t get to talk, you f***ing Nazi,” during the “Prove Me Wrong with Alex Stein” event, according to a video posted on X.
Another protester mocked Charlie Kirk’s assasination with a sign that read “F*** him right in the neck hole.”
Protesters also held signs that read, “Alex Stein eats sh**,” and “Alex [loves] Cornell 7,” referring to the Cornell students recently accused of sexual assault.
Police took one protester into custody while others tried to free him and called the officers “fascist,” according to another video posted on X.
There were approximately 300 attendees, and about a dozen of them were protesters, Lookout Eugene-Springfield reported.
Three arrests were made in total for disorderly conduct and harassment. About 30 officers were present at the event, according to The Daily Emerald.
“The individuals were warned about their behaviors and chose to continue,” University of Oregon police stated in an alert.
“If investigation finds that the people involved in any disruption are connected to UO, they will be investigated for any potential violations of the Student Conduct Code or employee ethics policies,” the alert stated.
“If it is determined those policies were violated, the university will consider appropriate actions at that time,” it stated.
Event organizer Libby Aithwaite told Lookout that TPUSA aims to host more events like this at UO.
“We’re honestly trying to get anyone to come out and debate people that disagree on campuses,” Aithwaite said. “Stein was just available for today, but we’re looking for people to converse and see if they can understand where we’re coming from and vice versa.”
UO spokesperson Angela Seydel told Lookout, “The University of Oregon upholds the right to free expression and academic freedom as essential to our mission.”
“We are committed to upholding these rights while fostering an inclusive and respectful campus,” she said.
Incidents like this are becoming a common occurrence as conservative groups on campus have been increasingly met with hostility.
Earlier this year, a protester was arrested for trying to drown out a Turning Point USA event featuring Nick Freitas, The College Fix previously reported.
Protesters chanted “Trans rights are human rights” and “TPUSA go away” as one student banged loudly on a drum.
At Oklahoma State University, an individual was caught on video trashing a Young America’s Foundation display last year. Student Jacob Avery pleaded guilty to malicious injury to property in September.
